A prosthodontist completes three years of advanced training in many restorative dentistry fields, such as complete and partial dentures, crowns, bridges, esthetics, occlusion, and congenital disorders pertaining to the development of the face and teeth. Prosthodontists are also trained in the technical and technological aspects of complicated dental and face aesthetic restoration as well as the laboratory production of complex dental prosthesis. A fellowship year is needed to practice maxillofacial prosthetics, a subspecialty of prosthodontics that focuses on treating patients with acquired and congenital deformities of the head and neck caused by cancer, surgery, trauma, and birth defects.
